Can Natural Hair Be Colored?

purple colored hairThose who have decided to “go natural” by foregoing relaxers (aka naturalistas) are very careful not to to do anything to jeopardize their carefully-tended locks. After doing a big chop and growing your hair out, it only makes sense to treat it gently and let your hair’s natural beauty shine. But what if you want to spice up your look with a little color? Read on for the answer to a common question about coloring natural hair, from your black hair experts at Levell’s Salon in Marietta!

Will coloring my hair damage it?

The short answer is no, coloring your hair should not cause appreciable damage if done by a trained, experienced colorist at a salon. While it is true that demi and permanent hair dyes (and the developers used with them) penetrate the hair shaft and technically damage the hair to some degree in that they compromise the structure of the hair shaft, when used properly they will not damage your hair in any significant sense. Remember that brushing, braiding, and otherwise handling hair damages it too; the key is to give your hair the TLC it needs depending on your styling choices, lifestyle, etc.

The most risky and potentially damaging part of coloring your hair is lightening it. If you are aiming for a lighter color, or a bright color that necessitates lightening your hair in order for it to show up, bleaching agents will have to be used. Bleach is undeniably hard on your hair, making it an absolute necessity to let a trusted professional handle the job.

“Natural hair” means different things to different people. Whether you are willing to opt for a double-process color (bleach and then color), a single process color (just dye), a semi-permanent, gloss, or temporary color that poses less of a commitment, or decide to keep your hair its natural hue, the choice is yours. Just remember that it is always best to let a seasoned professional handle your hair color instead of playing science lab in your bathroom at home!
