Summer Hair Care: How to Protect Processed Hair in the Summer
Summer can be a hard time for our hair, especially for black hair, and even more especially for processed hair. Many women feel forced to choose between protecting their hair from chlorine, salt, and other summer hazards, and actually getting to enjoy the season. If you have colored, relaxed, or any sort of chemically-altered hair, you need to be careful.
However, contrary to popular belief, you can still enjoy the swimming and sun of summer and keep your hair healthy and gorgeous. Just take a look at these tips for protecting colored or relaxed hair from chlorine and sun exposure.
- Chlorine kills color. Chlorine is a serious chemical, and it can wreak havoc on weakened hair structures, not to mention altering the color of your dye job. Blonds could wind up with the dreaded green hair if chlorine permeates the hair shaft, but even darker colors can be affected. Brunettes, redheads, and other hair colors can all take on an ashy look after a dip in chlorine.
- Add a barrier to keep chlorine out. Keep chlorine from entering the pores of your hair while swimming by coating your hair first. Leave-in conditioner is a cheap, easy, and effective solution. Argan oil is another good choice, and in a pinch, you can even minimize damage by wetting your hair with regular, non-chlorinated or non-salt water before swimming. Your hair will soak up the water and allow less chlorine or saltwater in.
- Always rinse well. After swimming, be sure to rinse your hair and scalp extremely thoroughly to ensure that all chlorine or saltwater is removed. Do not shampoo every time, because the shampoo will dry your hair out and make damage more likely. If you need more than just water to cleanse, use a conditioner designed for co-washing.
